2003 Bears' Lair California Cabernet Sauvignon From Trader Joes
Bears' Lair has a nice label with two friendly bears holding hands. ACNielsen's label study supports this logo choice. It seems that US consumers prefer the warm fuzzy feeling of a mascot. And yet, this label also manages to look regal.
For those of us who troll Trader Joes for cheap wines that taste kinda good, Bears' Lair fits the bill. It has a robust yet not too strong flavor, no lingering wino aftertaste and it doesn't even turn my teeth purple over dinner!
One wine-ranker disagrees with me, however:
- Judgementalist says: "I would suggest cheap vinegar instead."
Well, I guess my tastes might not be refined enough to agree. This wine is pleasant, goes really well with past and is one of those bottle I would buy by the case if Trader Joes would just PLEASE come to Nashville.
Summary: 2003 Bears' Lair Cabernet Sauvignon at Trader Joes
- Flavor: Dry, mid to full flavored, no bad aftertaste
- Color: Nice
- Ideal temperature: Room is best
- Response to decanting: It improves
- Recommendation: Buy a bottle, take it home and taste it, and if you like it, go immediately back to Trader Joes and buy them out.

where are you getting T.J.? I am totally wanting a T.J.'s here, after living down the street from one in Boston! I want 2 buck chuck!
also, about the veggie and fruit situation. are you finding any place? I went into the Fresh Market (Brentwood on Franklin Rd (which is 8th ave south) in the REI, USBank and Starbucks plaza) and as usually, their produce looks a little old. BUT, the upswing is that the fish case looked better than any fish in Nashville yet (of course that is not saying a lot). Just wanted you to know about the fish counter. Until then, I guess it is Plumgood veggies and grow my own.
I have to admit that every trip that goes through a city with a TJs, I stop and buy:
1) Organic coffee
2) Enchilada sauce
3) At least a case of various wines
4) Pasta
5) Those little rice crackers
6) Anything else that captures my fancy
This December, we drove through colorado to Santa Fe, then home and there is a TJs in Santa Fe
. I am certain that TN is off the target list for them because of its restrictive alcohol laws. Should we get a group together to advocate for change?!
As far as veggies go, I am resigned to ordering from Plum Good for now and planning the summer garden. I really hope that Whole Foods can deliver better fruits and veggies!
I gotta start doing the same! I am on my last drops of TJ Grade B real Maple Syrup, and my last bag of TJ trail mix.
I hate that liquor laws here keeping TJs out! That sucks! I know you are right.
Me too, I am hoping for better produce too. Wild Oats used to be good, but they seem so tired, and like no once cares over there anymore.
Have you tried Publix? I gave up on Wild Oats in the fall. There we were in the height of produce season and they had nothing. What the DID have looked all spotty and yucky.
